Flora Jane Thompson (1876 to 1947) was born in Brackley, Northamptonshire and is best known for her much-loved trilogy Lark Rise to Candleford (1945).

This semi-autobiographical work beautifully captures the fading traditions of rural England and has been widely adapted for radio and television, becoming a classic portrayal of a bygone era.

A Life shaped by words

Flora left school at just 14 to work as a post office clerk, but her love of writing soon blossomed. She wrote articles and nature essays to earn extra income.

After marrying a postmaster, she lived in several locations, including Hampshire, Dartmouth, and Bournemouth. From 1903 to 1916, Flora lived in Winton.

It was here that her passion for literature truly took flight, thanks to the opening of Winton Public Library in 1907. Flora described it as a life-changing event:

“For the first time in my life, I had access to a good public library and slipped in, like a duck slipping into water, and read almost everything.”

In a 1921 article, she credited the library as her Alma Mater—the place where her "real education" began.
