The Harbour water and mudflats provide a rich feeding station for wildfowl and wading birds. Some, such as the Cormorant and Black-headed Gull are here all year. Others are winter visitors, such as the aptly named Turnstone. Spring and Autumn are the best seasons for bird watching as huge flocks of migrating birds call in to 're-fuel' on their journey to breeding grounds in Scandinavia and Africa.
Did you know?
There is no such thing as a seagull. There are seven different species of gull in the UK including the Mediterranean gull. Poole Harbour is one of the UK's key breeding sites for these special gulls.
