Bridges
Watch the film showing the view as Poole's new bridge is opened. Herbert S. Carter Mayor of Poole called it “A bridge for all time”.
It was officially opened on Wednesday 9th March 1927. The town enjoyed a carnival atmosphere to celebrate the first toll free bridge. Schools were closed for the day and shops closed early. Over a thousand people gathered to witness the ‘Excel’ sail through the bridge “amid deafening cheers, hooting of sirens and firing rockets.”
